AI: Mind and Matter
Course Title: AI: Mind and Matter
Course Description:
The course *AI: Mind and Matter* explores the intersection of artificial intelligence and cognitive science, examining how AI can simulate, extend, and understand human thought processes. Through a combination of theoretical insights and practical applications, this course will delve into key questions surrounding machine learning, neural networks, consciousness, and intelligence.
Students will begin by exploring the philosophical foundations of the human mind, touching upon concepts such as perception, reasoning, problem-solving, and memory. These topics will then be compared to current AI models that attempt to replicate or surpass these capabilities. As AI technologies like deep learning evolve, they bring us closer to building machines capable of performing tasks traditionally associated with human intelligence. But do these machines truly “think”? Can they be conscious? What are the ethical and social implications of creating machines that can process data and make decisions with increasing autonomy? These are some of the critical issues addressed in the course.
Participants will study key algorithms and frameworks that power today’s AI, such as decision trees, genetic algorithms, reinforcement learning, and artificial neural networks, while also examining how these technologies challenge our understanding of cognition. The course will focus not only on current technological advances but also on the potential for AI to serve as a tool in cognitive neuroscience, offering new insights into how the human brain works.
Practical labs will involve working with AI models to solve real-world problems, applying AI techniques to simulate aspects of human cognition, such as language understanding, pattern recognition, and autonomous decision-making. A special emphasis will be placed on the ethical considerations involved in AI’s growth, including the biases that arise in machine learning models, the risks of AI exceeding human control, and the societal implications of widespread AI adoption.
The course will conclude with a forward-looking discussion on the future of AI and its role in expanding our understanding of what it means to think, feel, and interact with the world. With the rapid progress in AI research, the boundary between machines and minds is becoming more blurred, and this course will equip students with the conceptual and practical tools to navigate this exciting and evolving field.
By the end of AI: Mind and Matter, students will have a comprehensive understanding of both the technical mechanics and philosophical implications of AI, as well as the critical skills to engage in cutting-edge research or practical applications in this domain.
Prerequisites: Basic programming knowledge (Python preferred) and an introductory course in either AI, cognitive science, or philosophy is recommended.
Learning Outcomes:
– Understand the foundational principles of human cognition and how they compare to AI models.
– Develop proficiency in AI algorithms and neural networks.
– Explore the ethical implications of AI in society.
