3Rs, Coffee Shops and Mastering Uncertainty
Welcome to this week’s Remote Work Newsletter! Each week we drop a video to help you more productive wherever work, a work-from-anywhere insight and share our favourite new thing.
Over the last week or two, we’ve seen quite a lot of debate on social media as to whether it’s possible to work well in places like coffee shops. The logic goes that you can only really do your best work if your environment is set up perfectly, and while you may be able to achieve that from home, it’s almost impossible to do it in a coffee shop.
Based on what have we seen in practice, we think this argument ignores two important points. 1) Neurodiversity. Some people cannot focus in busy, noisy environments, while others can focus better. 2) Work Modality. You may perform some types of work really well in a home office, other types in a co-working space, and still more in a busy coffee shop.
The bigger point here is that the right place to work for you depends on who you are, what you are doing, and when you are doing it. So if you have the flexibility to do so, find out what works for you and work from there, while of course making sure that you can do so comfortably and safely.
Recommendation
The Modern workplace is unstructured, ambiguous and full of uncertainty. We can deal with it FAR better if we develop a new relationship with uncertainty. Matt Watkinson has written a great new book about the topic – it’s absolutely worth a read. You can check it out here.
